What Is Prevailing Wage?
Prevailing wage is the minimum hourly rate New York law requires for construction work on public projects — anything paid for with public money. It is far above the ordinary minimum wage, and it has two parts: a cash base wage and supplemental benefits (the hourly value of health and pension coverage, owed to you in cash if your employer does not provide it). Your rate depends on the county you worked in, on the classification of the work you actually did, and on the date you did it, because a new schedule takes effect every July 1. It applies whether or not you belong to a union, whatever your immigration status, and whether you were hired directly or through a subcontractor, labor broker or staffing agency. Each county page below explains this in more detail alongside its rates.

How often do New York prevailing wage rates change?
A new annual determination takes effect every July 1. NYSDOL also posts corrections and updates on the first business day of each month, applied retroactively to July 1, and many trades have increases scheduled partway through the year.
